Skill Test PPL(A): Procedure, Manoeuvres, and Preparation

The Skill Test is the practical examination at the end of your PPL(A) training — a flight with an examiner nominated by Austro Control that determines whether you receive your licence. Here you can read how the test is structured, which manoeuvres are required, and what happens if you fail a section.

What is the Skill Test?

The PPL(A) Skill Test is the final practical examination in accordance with Part-FCL (Annex to Commission Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011, Appendix 7). The test is conducted by a Flight Examiner (FE) authorised by Austro Control. You fly a pre-planned flight with the examiner that covers all relevant licensing requirements.

Prerequisites before you are eligible to sit the test:

Procedure on the Day of the Test

Allow approximately 4–5 hours. A typical schedule:

  1. Briefing & paperwork (approx. 30–45 min): The examiner checks your logbook, medical certificate, theory endorsements, language proficiency entry, and the aircraft documentation set.
  2. Flight preparation (60–90 min): You receive a routing (typically approx. 100–150 NM with two to three turning points). You carry out a weather briefing, NOTAM check, mass & balance, performance calculation, flight planning with current wind, fuel calculation, and flight plan task.
  3. Pre-flight with aircraft inspection — observed by the examiner.
  4. Flight (approx. 90–120 min, depending on weather and route).
  5. Debriefing with a result for each section.

The Six Sections

The Skill Test is divided into six sections, each assessed separately:

Assessment: Pass, Partial Pass, Fail

Each section is assessed individually as "pass" or "fail". Possible outcomes:

Preparation — What Really Helps

Common Pitfalls

If You Fail

No drama — but take it seriously. The examiner will provide written documentation of which section(s) were failed, along with a specific reason. Next steps:

  1. Debrief with your flight instructor — ideally the following day.
  2. Targeted additional training (1–3 flights usually suffice for a partial fail).
  3. Book a new appointment with the same or a different examiner. The examiner fee (typically €300–500 in Austria, depending on the examiner) is payable again, as is the aircraft rental.
  4. Complete the re-test within 6 months; otherwise the entire Skill Test must be repeated from the beginning.

Failing the Skill Test once does not make you a worse pilot. What matters most is that you address the identified weakness thoroughly before attempting the test again.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the PPL(A) Skill Test take in total?

Allow 4 to 5 hours: briefing and documentation check approximately 30 to 45 minutes, flight preparation 60 to 90 minutes, the actual flight 90 to 120 minutes, and a debriefing of 20 to 30 minutes.

What does the Skill Test cost in Austria?

The examiner fee is typically between €300 and €500, depending on the examiner. In addition, you will need to cover approximately 2 to 2.5 hours of aircraft rental and the Austro Control fee for licence issue (approximately €110 as of 2024). Check current rates directly with your ATO/DTO and Austro Control.

What happens if I fail only one section?

With a partial pass, you only need to re-fly the failed section. This must be done within 6 months of the first attempt. If the deadline passes or you fail the re-test again, the entire Skill Test must be repeated.

Who selects the examiner?

As a rule, your ATO or DTO will suggest an examiner from the pool of Flight Examiners authorised by Austro Control. You may also contact an FE directly, provided they are authorised to conduct PPL(A) Skill Tests.

Do I need to coordinate the flight with the examiner in advance?

No. The examiner provides the routing and the alternate destination on the day of the test. You then carry out the complete flight planning on the spot. It is assumed that you are already monitoring the weather and know your regular training aircraft thoroughly.
